Broome -Wickham -Cairns (24.11.2001 - 10.01.2002)

Hi folks,
here is another page from my trip about the last 6 weeks that I spent in Broome with Brendan.
Daryn (Brendan housemate was with us) left Broome at Christmas evening but we all had a good time together playing Monopoly, some dice games, Backgammon (with the hard rules) and some other games.
The day before Christmas we even started to built up a Carera racing course and had some fun with this.
During the first week in Broome I rented a Motorbike a little Vespa so I was free to go shopping and into town or to the beach (what I did quite often ) when I wanted to and since Brendan and Daryn had to work I spent most of the day on my own.
Brendan was again cooking for all of us and he is a real cooking wizzard.
The picture resolution is not that good today, but then the downloading goes faster, and you can pick the pictures to get them bigger and in better quality.

Then on the 27 th we drove to Wickham near Karratha (800 km south of Broome) to meet Jan and Paul (his parents from Perth) as well as Jan's brother Cliff and his wife Leanne and their 3 children Nadine, Shaun and Kelsey.
What a trip! Hi Cliff and Leanne, thank you again for your great hospitality!
On the first 600 km from Broome to Karratha I counted ~30 cars on the road and maybe as many dead Kangaroos. I wonder how these few cars can kill so many of them. We drove from 5 am til 1 pm and were both glad to arrive so eary because it was a very hot day.
Jan and Paul came some hours later from south and after a wonderful Dinner we all went to the beach to watch the Turtles while they lay their eggs. It was amazing for all of us.
These big over 1 meter diameter Turtles who get onto this beach, dig a hole and ley their eggs. We watched them and when they are finished they tried to cover the nest and get back into the water.
I have lots of pictures of them, but unfortunately gave all of them away and already sent the negatives home.
So if anyone (Brendan, Jan ?) can scan one or two of the best turtle pictures and email it to me? Thant would be great, otherwhise you have to wait until I got home.

The next day Jan and Paul got the bad news that someone broke into their house and stole the save. So they decided not to stay longer, they wouldn't enjoy it, and instead went back to Perth.
That was very sad, not just because they left but because also of the precious jewleries and other things which were gone. I hope the police was successful and found the thieves and some of your things.

The next days were very busy.
We went Mudcrabbing which was a real adventure for me.
Mudcrabbing is something where you put closed shoes on (no sandals), a long sleeve shirt and lot of mosquito repellent and then walk through the mangroves at low tide (they are usually very muddy then) and try to find the holes where the crabs are living. You dig into the holes with a metal stick and if you are lucky and experienced enough you can hear from the sound of the stick that a crab is in there.
Then you try everything with this stick and maybe with the sticks of the others to get this crab out of his hole.
Once it is out, you find a brave strong man who is courageous enough to hold the claws of the crab and then you tie it together with a rope before you put them in a sac.
Sometimes the crabs try to escape and one should prevent that but carefully and possibly with the stick not with the fingers.
At the end of 2.5 hours crabbin we ha 6 crabs (all o them found found by the two experienced men Cliff and Brendan, I found not one!) but the mozzies found me.
So most of us were muddy, bitten and exhausted just from walking through the mud looking for crab. Days later we went fishing and I decided that is more my thing, although the crabs were very delicious.
With fishing we were even less sucessful in Wickham but it was nice to make a ride in Cliffs boat and the fishing itself was very relaxed.
Later on I went fishing in Broome with Brendan and we got lots of fishes, small ones but enough for a delicious dinner.

Cliff who is working at Robe River Mining Co drove us arround at the loading area where they crack the raw ironore and store it on little hills until it is transported onto the ships.
A huge plant and quite impressive.
We also drove to Dampier where they have t a big earthgas loading station. Pipelines and big tanks where the gas is stored before they load it.
Back inCairns I went to the Willie Creek Pearl farm and learned something about saltwater pearls.

Then on the 5 th of january after 6 wonderful weeks I left Broome and Brendan under tears and flew to Cairns.
Here I am now and continueing my trip.
I already went to Kuranda by Skyrail and back in the scenic train.
Then I spent one day snorcheling on Green Island and did a 2 -day trip to Cape Tribulation. I stayed in a tent in the rainforest and did a 3 hour horsebackriding trip through the tea plantages of Daintree and through the Rainforest and National Park. I really enjoyed that. I am going on a 3 day sailing and Scuba diving trip tomorrow, so maybe later this week I have more pictures and more to write about Cairns before I leave south.

Darwin-Kakadu NP-Alice Springs-Uluru-Kata Tjuta-Kings Canyon (5.11.-23.11.01)

Now 22.11.01 I am in Alice Springs and here comes my last travel report from the last weeks which seem like months to me.

I arrived in Darwin on the 4 th of November from Broome and during the first days I had to deal with some stomach problems and diarrhea which was probably from some bad water we had during our tour through the Bungle Bungles (Purnulu NP).
I spent my nights and also some days in the YHA in Darwin a nice hostel with pool close to the city center with several of the other guys from the last tour.
Darwin is not too big and there is not much to do but we had lots of dinners at the Vic's where we had dinner coupons from the Kimberley Adventure Tour and they also had a Jungle party one night which I joined with some others.
I went to the Mueseum and Art Galerie which was quite impressive and I really enjoyed watching the Aboriginal paintings which are quite different in Darwin compared to the ones in Alice.
The often paint in X-Ray style and have figures like kangoros, emus, crocodiles and goannas as well as other animals on their pictures and they use also often lines instead of the points and dots the Aboriginals around Alice Springs use.
I went to a market and also to the Doctors Gully in Darwin which is a fish feeding place and hundreds of fishes come to the shore to be feeded.
Baramundi as well as Stingrays and shovel nose rays and hundreds of milkfishes (I am not sure if the name is correct).

BTW. the night we arrived in Darwin our whole group from the Tour went to a place called "Tim's on the Bay" which I can highly recommend, a very nice Restaurant with a big seafood and meat buffet for 25 $ as much as you can eat.
That was really great and we had lots of Oysters, Octopus, mussles, shrimps crabs and many more different types of fish as well as some wonderful deserts. Later we went to the irish pub beside the hostel, drank several beers and I learned again how difficult it can be for me to say good bye to the people I spent such a great time with. Thank you all for these 9 days and I really hope to see you again somewhere here or in Hamburg when I am back there. So far I hope you have a great time.

Hovever on the 11. and 12. November I booked a tour to the Kakadu Nationalpark, which is ~400 km east of Darwin and we visited the Ubir Art site with it's old aboriginal paintings and a wonderful view on a lookout to Arnhem Land.

During the night we stayed at the Coolinda Lodge Campsite in big all year round tents and had a dinner at the restaurant.
In the morning we got up early to make a walk to the Gubara Creek where we had a nice swim and a waterfall. Then we visited the Nourlangie Artsite and the Visitor Center before we drove home.

Our group was not very big only 7 people and 4 of them french which didn't speak much englisch so we had some problems with understanding. But this tour from Aussie Adventures had definitive the best lunch package I have ever had on these tours. With lots of fresh salat and fresh fruits and it was also pretty expensive compared to the others.

Two days after the Kakadu Tour I went on a 2 day tour Darwin to Alice Springs which was also quite nice and just some dollars more than the greyhound.
We stopped at the Edith Falls were I already went to with the Kimberley Tour and had a little stop in Katherine. Our overnight stay was in Daly Waters which is on almost every map although it is only a small village where 18 (yes eighten) people life. I am always amazed how small these villages are and realize that I expect some bigger towns. So the most important place in daly waters was the pub, where the whole town and all tourists spent the evening and part of the night.
In the backhyard they had a little pool and our tour guides started a little Barbequeue that we enjoyed after sereval beers.

But it was a quite short night because we had to get up at 4 am in the dark because during the next day we had to drive about 900 km to Alice, and there were not many tops on the way except at the Devils Marbles where we had lunch in the middle of nowhere.

We arrived in Alice at 5 pm and nearly all of us stayed at Annies Place a very nice Backpackers with kitchen, pool free breakfast and a great restaurant where I had dinner nearly every day now for only 5$ for people who stay here.

At Annies place they also offer Tours to the red center Mulga's tours and so I did a 3 day Camping tour with Greg during the 18, 19. and 20 th November.

During the first day of our tour we all met at the reception at 6:30 am and since it is nearly 500 km drive to the Uluru and Kata Tjuta NP we only arrived there after lunchtime and because it was so very hot we first had a look at the visitors center.
During the evening we did the 2 hours walk arround the Ayers Rock which was really impressing. It is just one big rock, stone with holes and broken parts which lies beside and marks and Greg our Tourguide told us stories about the dreamtime. SO every mark on the rock has a story about Wanabi the rainbow serpant who was angry about another spirit who killed her nephew and so she hit this other animal and that's were the marks on the rock come from.
I only noticed with these stories who discribe the landscape and the places like waterholes and mountains how different the Aboriginies way of thinking is compared to ours so it was very intertesting.
We also went to the visitors center where they wrote down some of these stories and also say "we don't want you to climb the rock".
Some of our group wanted to climb it but because of bad wind conditions the climb was closed on the next day. But these stories were very interesting and the Rock itself was very impressive for me.
After our walk arround we went to the sunset parking area where hundreds of people were waiting packed with Champaigne or beer (like we) and cameras waiting for the change of colours when the sun went down and I have to admit that I made about 20 pictures which look pretty much the same here are they.

After I arrived in Alice Springs during the first night it was amazing cold and we could not even open the door of our room at night, because it was too cold. Then on the trip we camped in the bush, made a big fire and put all swags arround the fire put our sleepingbags on or in the swags and I had a beer until I fall asleep. Some people where talking but at least everyone was so tired that we all got to sleep very early.
Greg our guide woke us up at 4 am while it was still dark and because it was the night of the meteorite fly into the earth's atmosphaere (sure this spelling is not correct) we saw falling stars all over the ski. It was really amazing and a great experience.
On the second day of our tour we made a walk through the valley of the winds at the Olgas (Kata Tjuta). That was brilliant and the afternoon as well because we had a nice little swim at a waterhole.

During the morning of the third day we walked through the Kings Canyon which was very impressive.

We needed the whole aternoon to drive back to Alice Springs where I spent some more days. During one evening in Alice I met Peter the son of Catherine anothe 5W member in Adelaide who invited me. We had some beers and he gave me several informations what to do in Alice. I really thought of this ballon trip but at least didn't made it. But however, best wishes to you and thanks again for the nice evening.
One afternoon I went to the reptile center which was a bit scary, because I had a phyton called Scarlett arround my neck. It was a little weird when she seached her way though the visitors necks while we stood in a row . The pictures are on the next film which is not develloped so far, so more about that later.

On the 24 th I had a plane back to Broome where I have a little rest before I continue my trip to Cairns and down south along the east coast.
To all of you a great time and enjoy everything you do.

Broome-The Gibb River Road-Bungle Bungles NP-Lake Argyle-Darwin (27.10.-4.11.01)

Hi guys, I arrived in Darwin 2 days ago.

I spent a great time in Broome (nearly 2 weeks) and this time was very relaxing and joyfull on the Cable Beach, with walking along the beach. I found a great spot where I could put my hammock up in the shade and so I was pretty much hanging arround during the day, also because it was quite hot there. I also spent most of the time with Brendan the son of Jan and Paul where I stayed in Perth. Brendan was sooooo nice to me, and I definitely enjoyed his company... I could stay in his clean, airconditioned house play with his 3 dogs, fall in Love with Aryba, watched some videos with Aryba sitting on my belly, enjoyed Brendans cooking talents and the explanations from Darren to movies, politics and other things.

I enjoyed a sunset at gantheaume Point, and my first fishing with a fishingrod experience when Brendan took me to a nice and very lonely place on the beach. I really caught a fish called : Whiting and Yellow finn bream And we spent some time in natural water pools where little fishes nealy bite in our legs. We did a lot more and I miss all of them already, and hope to meet them again and they have always a place in my heart

On the 27.10. I left Broome with a very heavy heart ( I don't know if this expression is also used in englisch) but it was quite difficult to leave. I then went with Peter our Tourgiude from Kimberley Adventure Tours and 8 other people on the Tour to Darwin. During the first days on the Gibb River Road we had pretty much the same routine during the day. Peter woke us up with a nice bird noise (great) but at 5:30 am which is not really my time. We slept in a moskito tent and everyone had a Swag one of these great Australian matresses with blanket and Pillow, much better that sleeping bag and Airmattress easy to roll up and together. However, after putting down the Mozzie tents and rolling up the swag we had a short breakfast (no showers available because we slept all 8 nights in the bush, except one night on an island on Lake Argyle) and then after packing filling the waterbottles we went to one of the more than 10 gorges that we swam through.

Windijana, Lennard and Bell Gorge, at Manning Gorge we spent a half day hiking up the gorge and swimming down after some great jumping and diving experiences at the dry Waterfall. We were swinmming with sandals and t-shirts on which was also a new experience for me. Then we walked down the gorge, swam parts of it, one part was only 2 meters wide and not very deep, and full of spidernets and spiders which were hanging above our heads. With his special creativity Peter build a kind of swimming ring out of our nearly empty Waterbottles and a rope for one of us and so we all were able to swim through the longer parts of this gorge. So we spent the first 3 days in almost 10 gorges enjoing the water and waterfalls, the nights under clear stars fresh air although it was also at night quite hot. In the evening Peter found a place where we built up our Buschcamp, build up the mozzi tents, we chopped some veggies or meet (I always chopped to much and too small, stupid me) but Peter was able to cook great dishes, with pasta, or a stew and we always had an cold beer and crackers with a nice dipp while chopping, maybe this is the reson why I liked this vegetable chopping job so much. Sometimes after dinner we had some more beers and some great neck massage sessions started just because we can do it, but also because our muscles were so tensioned. We were sitting with 8 people in the back of this car, all tired, dirty, sweatty and with not much space but this really strengthens our group and makes us stick more together (this is what I think) and ofcourse Peters energy and effort he put in the group.

After 3 Days in Gorges and Waterfalls we arrived at El Questo a 1 Million Acres Cattle Station where we had a great swimm in Emma Gorge and believe it or not the first shower :-). I felt so clean after that...

We went oin to the Molly falls where we camped overnight and also had a swim in the evening which was good to cool down for the night. Then on the next Day we drove to the Bungle Bungle Ranges and walked through Echidna Gorge and bushcamped in the Nationalpark, watching the sunset in the evening. Next day we went to the Frog Waterholeand Cathedral Gorge in the south of the Bungles. It was so bloddy hot! Gillian had a thermometer on her daypack and as far as I remember it showed nearly 40 Degrees Celsius in the sun at 10.00 am in the morning. In nearly every waterhole we wettened our shirts or sarongs and hats which we put on our head just to stay a little cooler.

Then in the evening we went to the Airstrip of the Bungles NP and some of us spent 180 $ for a great helicopter flight over the bungles. I was quite scared before we stared because the helicopter had no doors and so the only thing to hold back from falling is this little seat belt. But then it was really phantastic, and I enjoyed it a lot. The helicopter started very slow, and got higher very slow and stable. I had no panic like I had when I were in the elevator of the Eiffeltower in Paris long time ago, but this experience is still in my memory and one more time I experienced how great the feeling is when I ignore my fear and just do it, without thinking of it. Streching is great and I thank everyone who supported me in this during the last years, Abundance group, hi to all the Artisten, friends, and ofcourse everyone on this tour. You were great travel companions as well as the guys from Westcoast Explorer (HI Big AL, I am still here, thanks also for your suppost!).

However another highlight of this trip is the Lake Argyle experience. On the 2 nd of November we arrived at the lake Argyle arround noon. We loaded all the swags and lots of Beer and Champaigne onto one speedboat and Peters father Don as well as some friends Kim , Greg and Garry drove the boats to an island on the lake Argyle. It is a very huge lake and the island is quite small but they build up a tape for shade, have cooking equipments and everything which is needed. So we spent the evening with some drinks on the beach and in a little gum boat which was drawn by the speedboat and you have to take care not to fall off. It was a kind of wild and rough game and I can still feel my throat mussles from holding on the gumboat. It was great fun and very exhausting. Then we went up to watch the beautiful sunset, had another great meal from Peter and sat on the fire while Greg was playing Digeridoo and telling stories before we started to paint our bodies with red ocker colour to get prepared for the nightly crocodil hunt. It was a little weird and the only white thing in this dark light were our teeth. So walking down to the boat I did't know what to expect. We drove over the lake and found lots of crocs, some 15 cm long with quite a lot of teeth and some new born where the eggshells were lying on the beach and the crocs were nearly blind, had their eyes closed. I thought a short time that the crocs parents probably would be arround somewhere while we were jumping over and in the water catching their babies, but it was so exciting that I forgot about this thought very soon.

After our nightly croc hunt we stayed on another beach, some of us tried to wash off the red coulour which was not so easy, others were sitting by the fire starting to sleep and getting warm from the fire. I still have this picture in my mind.

Next day we left this nice island and our new friends and continued our trip spent another night in the bush, visited the hot springs in Katherine and the Edith Falls and now I am in Darwin in the YHA and get filled upwith energy refill my batteries before I go on a trip to the Kakadu Nationalpark and further to Alice Springs.

Hamburg-Singapore-Perth-Broome (23.9. - 13.10.01)

Perth 3.

An meinem 2.

Meine guete, was fuer eine Tour.

Also spaeter mehr.
